The Legacy of Parsis

The craft of Parsi embroidery is dying out in India, threatening the community’s culture and heritage. The aim is to sustainably revive-archive the craft of Parsi embroidery through strategies such as marketing and skill development.

Researching with a community

As a team, we wanted to work with the possibility of working around an artform-art oriented community and collaborate with them on the basis of their problem and required ‘relief’. After multiple iterations and ideations we reached the consensus of working around the Parsi culture.

Our goal was to somehow contribute to the archival of Parsi embroidery and create some sort of change in the blindspot around it. Tedious research and ideation led us to selecting Parsi Garas as our point of interest for the heavy storytelling that has been woven through generations of women owning them.

Why is the art form dying?

For primary research, we had reached out to many prominent individuals related to this dying artform, in order to understand political and historical factors that resulted in the near extinction of the art form. After seven tedious interviews with seven wonderful women, we had concluded with five key insights

Formulating a three step process of archival

After interviewing the director of UNESCO PARZOR, we understood the UNESCO process of reviving and archiving cultural artforms. Dori the project was going to function as a three step process: Awareness, Educate and Exhibit. Awareness, the first step of the project, is going to be a documentary speaking about the artform and letting newer people know about this artform. Educate, would be through a masterclass by a Gara expert, who would take workshops to teach the fashion design students of our college, the techniques and skill of the embroidery. The final step would be, exhibit - which would be through zines and print media which will be circulated.

  • Awareness: through a documentary

  • Educate: through a masterclass

  • Exhibit: through print media

The tone of the documentary was warm, humble and nostalgic and the color grading was done to achieve this.

As an avid video editor and filmmaker, I was in charge of editing the documentary and setting the right tone for it. I wanted to spotlight the heirloom aspect of the apparels, which been passed down from generation to generation. The documentary revolved around three women of a Parsi household - A daughter, mother and grandmother; each sharing their memories associated with a same piece of apparel which was worn by all through the course of time. The documentary spoke about their community, their artform and their bond with these heirloom sarees.
